Family Album Number One
|
“So where do you want me to start...” Through a collage of family photographs, photocopies and personal audio recordings, Verburg creates a layered and obstructed narrative exploring memory and family history. By repeatedly photocopying the family photographs, the original images disintegrate, mirroring the complexities, challenges and limitations in the recounting and retelling of history. The film explores the fragility of personal memory, and photographs as physical tokens of that memory. It testifies that the telling is often an act of emotional encryption, leaving the younger generation to decipher messages between what has been communicated and what hasn’t. (from the press release.
